Bsa 206 - 2000's Animation

2000s animation started to go into the depths of the human mind. A primary method used during this time was Rotoscoping. Rotoscoping was the process of painting over moving images. In the early 2000s a man by the name of Bob Sabistan created a program called Rotoshop. It was intended to be used to Rotoscope more efficiently. And it did. Over the 2000s this process led to films such as A Scanner Darkly and the animated documentary Ryan. Review Ryan Ryan is a short documentary about Chris Landreth interviewing Ryan Larkin. Ryan was a former successful animator who had fallen into ruin. The animatyion constantly shows a beautiful but dark tale of mental faults. The sequences often end up in restricting animations causing the viewer to think about how 'Trapped' the subjects are. Overall as it progresses it gets more twisted, with things like Ryan talking about his alcohol problem, and why he doesn't do work any more. Overall this is a captivating piece that makes the viewe...

German New Cinema was a cinema movement that began in the early 60's and went until the early 80's in Germany. It was a movement inspired by the French New Wave. This movement was headed by the formation of the Oberhausen Manifesto. A Manifesto that stated "The Old Cinema is dead. We believe in the New Cinema". Most movies in this movement left out the film stars and just used ordinary people, and quite often refused budgeting from larger companies. Notable movies included Yesterday Girl (1966) - A Film about an East German girl struggling to fit in with West German life, Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) - A classic vampire styled film

BSA 206 - Richard Williams

Richard Williams was an animator and the art director of Who Framed Roger Rabbit. He was a man with a huge ambition. To create a masterpiece. In 1964 he began working on an animation that in his terms was to be his masterpiece. The only issue is Richard had too much of an eye to detail, which caused setbacks and delays galore. He continued working on this film for 26 years. This was until he struck a deal with Warner Bros. then failed to deliver. Some of the content of his film was adapted to influence the creation of the movie Arabian Nights.

BSA 206 - British New Wave

The British New Wave was a movement of Social Realist films that began around the early 1960s. These films focused on the lower classes of workers with the protagonists mostly being 'Angry young men'. These films largely based their plots on down to earth situations rather than more typica; theatrical issues. Examples of these films are Look Back in Anger (Tony Richardson, 1959), and Room at the Top (Jack Clayton, 1959). Both these films look at love triangles and clashes between social classes. These kinds of films later went on to influence more modern Social Realist films.

BSA 206 - 80s Animation

Animation from 1986 - 1989 1986 - 1989 was a time of surrealism. A lot of the animation that came out of that time frame was very contemplative of the mind. For example the Street of Crocodiles by The Brothers Quay explores a mans loneliness in a very nightmarish manner through the use of his puppets. This time was also a rise of 2d animation, with such hits as Akira rising to popularity worldwide. Review The Hill Farm The Hill Farm is an animation created solely by Mark Baker over the course of 3 years. It is a short film that follow the perspectives of multiple groups of people over the course of 3 days. The animations very basic style lends itself to the plot very well. This wouldn't usually mean a lot, however within the animation there is no dialogue so this becomes an essential part in the story telling. There was no point in the animation I felt confused despite the lack of more blatant story telling.

BSA 206 - 90's Animation

90's animation began Bugs Life and Antz 2 competing films with near identical topics but different approaches. There was controversy around the 2 films as they were both very similar. This was believed to be due to the fact that Jeffrey Katzenberg left Disney to form Dreamworks around the time that Pixar/Disney were planning the movie Other Notable 90s works Gorillaz music videos Perfect Blue The Periwig Maker USA Television shows. The late 90s is when the animated TV show style we know today started rising in popularity. The main examples of these shows being Futurama, The Simpsons, Family Guy, and Spongebob Squarepants. Pixar Shorts In the late 90s to early 2000s Pixar started to release short animations, usually with other movies. These animations were designed not only to entertain the audience but to test Pixars newer technologes against the larger audiences. Review Geris Game Geris game is a short animation about an old man playing chess against himself....

Reservoir Dogs and Non-Linear Narrative

Reservoir Dogs is a film directed by Quentin Tarantino and edited by Sally Menke released in 1992. The film follows a group of thugs after a bank heist goes south. Despite the non-linear nature of the film, it does an excellent job in developing all important characters and revealing plot points in a reasonable structure. I would definitely recommend this movie as it is an interesting change of pace from the norm. Another film with Non-Linear narrative is The Social Network directed by David Fincher. This films plot is told through a bunch of flashbacks as the details are being discussed at a course hearing. It does a great job at giving the different perspectives of the story and gives a decent sense of how the situation boiled up to the point of the lawsuit.
